Why do people do Technical diving?
There is no doubt that Tec diving isn’t for everybody. How do you know if it’s for you?
The appeal of technical diving is in the challenge and adventure of exploring parts of our ocean which most people will never see. This, of course, involves extra risks and therefore a higher standard of precision in our actions. For many divers this is enough to put them off Tec diving, whist for others this is exactly where the appeal lies.
If you are an experienced diver who wants to go beyond your current limits and are willing to accept the added risks, training, investment and commitment it demands, then PADI TecRec courses are your ticket to extreme adventure.
TecRec Courses
As you can see from this chart, there are several levels of Technical diver training.
If you want to ‘try before you buy’ then you can enroll in a Discover Tec programme, which introduces you to the basic theory, equipment and ethos of technical diving. This optional experience programme is a great way to begin if you are curious but unsure if you’ll really like Tec diving.
Once you’re hooked, then the training is broken down into stages; each building on the last. As you progress through the various courses you’ll gradually build your competence, confidence and the scope in which you can utilise this training.
Starting at Tec40, you’ll learn the basics of using the equipment and hone your skills in time-management, gas-management and buoyancy control.
Tec 45 and Tec 50 build upon this foundation, each allowing you to dive deeper for longer and breath increasingly rich Nitrox mixes in order to accelerate your decompression.
All of these courses can be completed using backmount or sidemount cylinder configuration.
PADI Discover Tec
Curious about technical (tec) diving, but not sure about jumping into a course? PADI Discover Tec is a short confined water experience that allows you to give technical diving a try.
You get to wear all the extra tec diving gear and take it for a test dive. Your PADI Tec Instructor may introduce a few basic skills, such as primary to secondary regulator switch and gas shutdown procedures.
Pre-Requisites
- Be a PADI Open Water Diver
- Be at least 18 years old
- Have a minimum of 10 logged dives
PADI Tec 40
The PADI Tec 40 course is the first step in the transition from recreational no-stop diving to full technical/deep decompression diving.
This course introduces you to the fundamental principles of Tec diving and allows you to dive to 40 metres with limited decompression.
Pre-requisites
- A PADI Advanced Open Water Diver
- A PADI Enriched Air Diver with at least 10 dives using enriched air deeper than 18 metres
- A PADI Deep Diver or proof of at least 10 dives to 30 metres
- At least 18 years old and have a minimum of 30 logged dives
You also need to have a Medical Statement signed by a physician within the last 12 months.
Note that qualifying certifications from other diver training organizations may apply – ask us.
Duration: 4 days
PADI Tec 45
The PADI Tec 45 course is the second part of the full PADI Tec Deep Diver program. You’ll extend your depth limit to 45 metres and learn to plan and execute repetitive decompression dives using a single stage/decompression cylinder.
You’ll also make accelerated decompression dives using EANx or pure oxygen. This is a course where you’ll rise to the challenge and make the commitment to become a technical diver.
Pre-requisites
- Be a PADI Tec 40 diver
- Be a PADI Rescue Diver
- Have a minimum of 50 logged dives, with at least 12 dives on enriched air nitrox deeper than 18 metres and 10 dives deeper than 30 metres
- At least 18 years old
- Have a Medical Statement signed by a physician within the last 12 months.
Note that qualifying certifications from other diver training organizations may apply – ask us.
Duration: 4 days
PADI Tec 50
As a Tec 50 diver, you show that you’ve developed competency as a tec diver and have the skills to dive to a maximum of 50 metres.
You know how to make extended, accelerated decompression stops using up to two gases. It’s not easy to reach this level and earning your Tec 50 certification opens the door to deeper diving expeditions.
Pre-requisites
- Be a PADI Tec 45 diver
- Have a minimum of 100 logged dives, with at least 20 dives on enriched air nitrox deeper than 18 metres and 15 dives deeper than 30 metres
- At least 18 years old
- Have a Medical Statement signed by a physician within the last 12 months.
Note that qualifying certifications from other diver training organizations may apply – ask us.
Duration: 4 days
PADI Tec Sidemount
If you’ve looked into technical diving, you realize that tec divers always wear more than one tank. Sidemount is an increasingly popular way to configure multiple cylinders for technical diving.
You can enter the world of tec diving with the Tec Sidemount Diver course and apply what you learn to other TecRec courses. Why not integrate this course with the Tec 40, Tec 45 or Tec 50 courses.
Pre-requisites
- Be a PADI Advanced Open Water Diver
- Have a minimum of 30 logged dives
- At least 18 years old
- Be a PADI Enriched Air Diver (recommended)
- Have a Medical Statement signed by a physician within the last 12 months.
Note that qualifying certifications from other diver training organisations may apply – ask us.
